Exciting times in the I Say! Digital office as we have just learned that our Managing Director, Katie Sykes, will be appearing on the news tonight alongside music superstar Will.I.Am. Be sure to tune in at 6PM for ITN news or at 6.39PM for Channel 5.
Will.I.Am, who is most famous for making hit after hit with pop group Black Eyed Peas and for his place as a judge on TV talent show The Voice, met with Katie at a Prince’s Trust event in London today. The singer made a generous donation to the charity last year, and today reiterated his commitment to its goals. In particular, he is keen to promote STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in deprived communities. The pair will appear on the news tonight in order to talk about the importance of technology, both for young people themselves and for the nation’s economy. Ongoing changes to the workplace mean that knowledge of technology will be essential if we are to stay at the forefront of a global race. As a young entrepreneur involved in the technology industry, Katie shares Will.I.Am’s enthusiasm for this cause.
Katie is a Young Ambassador for the Trust, which aims to assist vulnerable young people with a variety of services. Each year, thousands are helped by the charity’s programmes, which include the entrepreneurship training and mentoring which Katie herself has benefited from.
It’s difficult to know what to say to people when you’re trying to explain the actual process and meaning behind that magic three letter acronym, SEO. I got into this conversation today with someone who happened to be a social worker and I was trying to best explain what it means. “Search engine optimisation” was my answer to, “what on earth is SEO?”. When I gave him the answer he looked visibly overwhelmed.
Don’t be. If you like infographics then you’re going to love the SEO and marketing resources we’ve been curating at Pinterest, and scrolling through the variety of easy to understand visuals is probably an easier way to show a ‘newbie’ the nuts ‘n’ bolts of how the whole thing works.
One of the most informative of the infographics we’ve collected on this subject for a while (and we’ve seen a few!) was put together by marketing agency Koozai, who gathered a veritable who’s who of SEO and search engine marketing superstars for their personal input. People like Danny Sullivan, Google’s Matt Cutts and Joost de Valk from Yoast (the people behind the definitive WordPress SEO plugin).
The links and information on this single infographic are worth their weight in gold and will go some way to turning the lights on the subject if you feel you’re in the dark and baffled by the terminology and relative ‘geek-speak’ usually spoken of in hush tones. Pagerank, SERPS, Panda updates and the like!
Brighton SEO (where we’ll be in a few days!) get a mention in the round up of SEO conferences too, nice to see our local area getting a shout out and we hope to meet up with a bunch of new faces and contacts whilst we’re there.
In a time where people are using their Blackberry to check-in at a client meeting, their iphone to record a video from a seminar and post it on Facebook, or CEO’s reaching out to connections on LinkedIn to find a new employee – social media is now more business than ever.
